Services
Provided by the Indian Education Program for the
2004-2005 School Year
|
Elementary Tutoring
Tutoring assistance will be offered to our Indian
Education students in grades 1-4, who are in need of
additional help and encouragement. The aim of the tutoring
program is to work with the teacher to help students who are
having difficulty in the basics. Tutoring takes place during
school hours, once a week for 30 minutes per session. In
this way, the student does not lose too much classroom time,
but is still able to get the extra help they sometimes need.
Parents may request tutoring assistance for their children
by calling our office
Secondary Tutoring
Tutoring assistance services are provided to our
secondary students as follows:
1. Miller Jr High: school - Tues & Thursday .
2. Aberdeen High: school by appointment. cmcpherson@asd5.org
3. Harbor High: At Harbor High Monday &
Wednesday.
Cultural
Enrichment
Cultural
Classes: At least 20 Native American arts and crafts
classes will be offered throughout the school year to our
students in grades K-12, who would like to participate in
them. The classes and the materials for the craft
projects are provided by Indian Education funds.
Indian Performances:
Culturally related activities and/or field trips will
be offered to our students through the school year. These
performances for students in K-12 grades, may include
cultural presentations, story telling, pow wows
etc.
Northwest Indian
Youth Conference: For students in grades 9 - 12.
Those High school students will then take part in
planning meetings to put on a conference for junior high
students. The conference takes place at Camp Bethel in
June.
Indian Education Library
Materials
Our program has an excellent selection of books and
audiovisual materials on American Indians which are
available for the teacher's classroom use. Our library
materials are located in the Miller Junior High Library and
may be checked out through the librarian there. All the
school libraries have e copy of our bibliography that
teachers may use to order any of our materials from the
Miller Library. These materials may also be checked out by
our parents and students.
Program Funding
The Indian Education Program is federally funded through
the U. S. Department of Education in Washington D.C. Funds
to operate our program are based upon the total number of
eligible students in our school district who have a Title
VII Student Eligibility Certificate form (506 form) on file
in our office.
Community
Involvement
Parents, guardians and students are kept informed of our
program's meetings, classes and other activities through a
monthly newsletter and activity calendar. Evening classes
usually begin in October or November and take place in the
high school cafeteria. After school classes are held in the
libraries of the elementary schools. All Indian Education
students are eligible to participate in any of these classes
no matter where they are offered.
