World Class Scholars

What is the World Class Scholars Program? The Program was started in 1993 to form a partnership between students, parents, schools and Grays Harbor College. The purpose of this partnership is to fulfill a promise to every 7th grader that if they study hard, act responsibly and work to improve their community, there will be a place for them at Grays Harbor College when they graduate from high school. Go to World Class Scholar forms.

How does the program work? Students sign a contract which commits them to:

* a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or better by the end of the 1st semester of their senior year (a borderline GPA will be determined by the 2nd semester grades)

* acquire and demonstrate the ability to work with groups, teach others new skills, accept leadership roles, serve others in the community, negotiate joint solutions to problems and work with people from diverse backgrounds

* demonstrate competence in reading, writing, arithmetic/mathematics and technology

In exchange for the above, Grays Harbor College promises that upon fulfilling the contract and meeting the admission requirements, the students will be accepted into any academic program offered at the college. They also will be granted a partial tuition scholarship and provided other financial aid assistance as needed to attend the College.

Questions and Answers

What if I sign up and then move out of the Twin Harbors area? You are still eligible to come back to participate in this program if you fulfill your contract commitments.

What school districts can participate in this program? Any school in the Grays Harbor or Pacific Counties, the area served by Grays Harbor College.

What if I start going to college somewhere else and transfer to Grays Harbor College? You can still qualify for the scholarship as long as you are still working towards your first college degree and it has not been longer than 28 months since you graduated from High School.

Is there a time limit on enrolling at Grays Harbor College and receiving this scholarship? Yes, you must do so within 28 months of graduating from High School.

What if I missed signing up in the seventh grade. Can I still sign up now? Maybe, depending on how close you are to graduating. If you were eligible to sign up in seventh and eighth grade, but do not do so, you may only enroll up to the ninth grade (you will also be required to perform 60 hours of community service, an increase of 10 hours over those students that have been in the program since junior high). Please remember: it is very difficult to make up several years of community service and portfolios. For guidance, talk with your school's parent mentor or guidance counselor.

What if I go to college elsewhere? We realize that fulfilling your commitment to become a World class Scholar may help you to be competitive for admission at other colleges. The scholarship and financial aid support is available only to those WCS who attend Grays Harbor College. However, you will receive distinction as a World Class Scholar and be able to list this as an award on your resume regardless of where you go to school.
