General Information Student Records The Student Information Form is usually the first form completed when enrolling a student in an Aberdeen school. The data listed on this form is vital and should always be kept current. This document contains a section that allows your child to be treated by a medical facility in the event of an emergency. Please notify the office if any information changes (i.e. phone number, address, emergency contact, etc) Lunch Program Breakfast and lunch are served daily in the school cafeteria. All students attending Stevens, including preschool and kindergarten children, are eligible to participate. Meal prices for the 2007-08 school year are the following: Breakfast Free and reduced price lunches are available to households that meet family income guidelines established by the National School Lunch Act. Applications may be obtained in the school office. All Child Nutrition Program Benefits and services are available to all children without regard to race, color, sex, handicap, age or national group. Parents are encouraged to take the opportunity to eat lunch with their child. Anyone wishing to do this is asked to call the school office before 9:00 AM, when possible, so that you may be added to the lunch count. School Bus Service A schedule is included that shows the Stevens attendance area that is serviced by bus transportation. If you have any specific questions regarding bus routes, please call the Transportation office at 538-8270 Report Process: a. The report is mailed to the student’s parents; Student Behavior ExpectationsWe believe in helping students develop and grow in a healthy way, by providingthem with confidence and dignity and teaching them how to become responsible with a heavy emphasis on respect and dignity for the child. We believe in sharing the control and sharing the thinking. We have one rule, “You can do what ever you want as long as it does not cause a problem for yourself or for anyone else.” We talk about what those things might be. We have listed below some policies that would cause a problem for others if broken. Please read and discuss these guidelines with your child/children. Procedures are set forth so that every student can enjoy a school setting that is safe and well structured. Parent involvement is essential in maintaining a positive environment. The staff recognizes that positive and timely communications are necessary to insure that parents are informed.
Teachers and principals have the authority and responsibility, in accordance with WAC 180.40.235 and RCW 28A.58.100 to maintain a safe school environment. Students also have the right to know the standard of behavior expected of them.
WEAPONS POLICY It is a violation of district policy and state law for any person to carry a firearm or dangerous weapon on school premises, school-provided transportation or areas of other facilities being used exclusively for school activities. It is also a violation of district policy for any person to carry or use in a threatening or disruptive manner any device, which resembles or is intended to look like a dangerous weapon. Any such violations shall be taken seriously by school officials and will be subject to corrective action or punishment. School officials shall notify the student’s parents or guardians and the appropriate law enforcement agency of known or suspected violations of this policy. Students who violate this policy shall be subject to discipline, including a one-year expulsion for a violation involving a firearm. The superintendent may modify the one-year expulsion on a case-by-case basis. TOBACCO POLICY District policy prohibits the use of tobacco by students, staff or visitors on school district property. Possession or distribution of tobacco products by minors is prohibited. School district property includes all district buildings, grounds and district-owned vehicles. Grievance Procedure for Discipline Action and Short-Term SuspensionAny student/parent/guardian who disagrees with the imposition of discipline or a short-term suspension shall have the right to an informal meeting with the building principal/designee for the purpose of resolving the grievance. The employee whose action is being grieved shall be notified of the initiation of such a grievance as soon as reasonably possible. During this meeting, the student/parent/guardian shall be subject to questioning by the principal/designee and shall be entitled to question school personnel involved in the matter being grieved. After this school level grievance meeting, if the issue is not resolved, the student/ parent/guardian, upon giving two school business days’ prior notice to the Superintendent’s Office, shall have the right to present a written and/or oral grievance to the superintendent/designee. If the issue is not resolved at the district level, the student/parent/guardian, upon giving two school business day’s prior notice to the Superintendent’s Office, shall have the right to present a written and/or oral grievance to the School Board during the Board’s next regular meeting. The Board shall notify the student, parent/guardian of its response to the grievance within ten school business days after the date of that meeting. The discipline or short-term suspension shall continue during the grievance procedure unless the principal/designee elects to postpone the action.
Immunizations and Health ServicesAll students are expected to be up to date with the immunizations required by Washington State law. The school nurse maintains records. The school nurse visits Stevens one and one half day(s) each week. She is on call for medical emergencies. The parent and physician must complete medication forms if your child is to take medication of any type during school hours. All medication and Student Attendance
Parents are requested to notify the school in the morning when their child will not be in school that day (538-2150). This is important for your child’s safety. When a child is not in attendance and the office has not been called, we will attempt to contact the home. This is done out of concern for the well being of the student. Students who are to be dismissed early, must be checked out from the office. Children must be signed in and out. Teachers will not dismiss a student from the classroom without a call from the office. Children who are 5 years old on or before August 31 are eligible for enrollment in kindergarten. Compulsory school attendance is required of Washington children between the ages of 8 and 18, or who have not completed the 9th grade. . All doors, except the main entrance on South Farragut Street, are kept locked during the school day for the safety of our students. Visitors, please report to the office and sign in. If you have business within the general school area you will be issued a Visitor’s Pass. Your cooperation with this policy will be greatly appreciated. General Information

If you have something to deliver to your child, please bring it to the office and we will see that he/she gets it. 7. Please meet your child outside the school or in our new parent room not in the hall. This helps to maintain a quiet and undisturbed learning atmosphere through the end of the school day. Lost and Found
A Lost and Found area is located in the multipurpose room. Each year many valuable items of clothing wind up in this area because there is no identification on the article. Please take a minute and mark your child’s belongings with their initials so that these may be returned to the owner promptly. Jackets and lunch boxes are the items most likely to become lost. Please have your child check if he/she has lost an item, because of space we will need to clean the lost and found out every other month. Student Insurance Student Accident and Dental Insurance is available. Brochures are sent home with each student on the first day of school. This program is made available as a convenience to parents and has no connection with the Aberdeen School District #5. It is entirely voluntary. Emergency School Closure Winter weather and school closure notices are given on local radio stations shortly after 6:00 AM during periods of inclement weather. Parents may come to the school at anytime and sign their children out. Please note that students cannot be released to anyone other than a parent unless prior authorization is given in writing. Student Pictures We have a new company taking student pictures this year. Picture packet and pricing information will be sent home approximately one week in advance. Every child will have a picture taken regardless of whether they are purchasing a packet. Individual pictures are used in the school records.
Stevens Parent Teacher Student Organization
Dress & Grooming Stevens encourages students to dress comfortably and appropriately for school. Students who do not comply with the dress guidelines will first be given the opportunity to call home for a change of clothes. If a parent is unable to be reached, students will be given appropriate clothing to change into. Below are the expectations of students attending Stevens. All articles of clothing must be free of any references to tobacco, drugs, alcohol, sex, gangs, profanity or anything disruptive to the learning process. Students are not allowed to wear hats, including scarves in the building unless needed for a medical reason. Some items that are considered inappropriate for school are as follows:
If your clothing causes a problem for someone else you will be asked to solve that problem. Reasonable regulations governing the appearance of students, participating in voluntary extracurricular activities, shall be established by the staff member in charge of the activity, and shall be communicated or made available to all students who choose to participate in such voluntary extracurricular activities.
After School Sports Program
The Aberdeen sports program at the elementary level places great emphasis upon participation and sportsmanship. Every attempt is made to insure that each child, regardless of athletic skill or ability, has a fair amount of playing time. Sports programs that are offered in the fall include flag football and volleyball. Both of these sports are open for both boys and girls in the 5th and 6th grades. The next season begins with girls’ basketball season in November and boys’ basketball season in January. Each season lasts eight weeks. The spring sports program is an intramural program with activities that vary depending upon student interest. Music
Band is offered as an elective for our 5th and 6th grade students during the school year. Orchestra is an elective for our 5th and 6th grade students. Our instrumental music teachers will be sending home more information on this program. Vocal music instruction is provided for students in grades K - 6. School Records Update
