General Information

Student Records

The Student Information Form is usually the first form completed when enrolling a student in an Aberdeen school. The data listed on this form is vital and should always be kept current. This document contains a section that allows your child to be treated by a medical facility in the event of an emergency. Please notify the office if any information changes (i.e. phone number, address, emergency contact, etc)

Lunch Program

Breakfast and lunch are served daily in the school cafeteria. All students attending Stevens, including preschool and kindergarten children, are eligible to participate. Meal prices for the 2007-08 school year are the following:

Breakfast
** Breakfast is free for all students **

Lunch
            Adult   $3.50   Child   $1.75               Reduced          $.40

Free and reduced price lunches are available to households that meet family income guidelines established by the National School Lunch Act. Applications may be obtained in the school office. All Child Nutrition Program Benefits and services are available to all children without regard to race, color, sex, handicap, age or national group.

Parents are encouraged to take the opportunity to eat lunch with their child. Anyone wishing to do this is asked to call the school office before 9:00 AM, when possible, so that you may be added to the lunch count.

School Bus Service

A schedule is included that shows the Stevens attendance area that is serviced by bus transportation. If you have any specific questions regarding bus routes, please call the Transportation office at 538-8270
Students who ride the bus are expected to behave in a manner that allows the driver to operate a safe vehicle.  Bus drivers are required to report students who misbehave. Please talk over bus behavior together.

Report Process:

            a.         The report is mailed to the student’s parents;
            b.         The student meets with the principal to discuss what occurred, which may                          result in disciplinary action being taken;
            c.         Students who are a consistent problem on the bus and prevent the driver                            from operating in a safe manner, may, after consultation with parents,                              be removed from the bus until safe operation of the bus can be assured.

Student Behavior Expectations

We believe in helping students develop and grow in a healthy way, by providing

them with confidence and dignity and teaching them how to become responsible with a heavy emphasis on respect and dignity for the child.  We believe in sharing the control and sharing the thinking. We have one rule, “You can do what ever you want as long as it does not cause a problem for yourself or for anyone else.” We talk about what those things might be. We have listed below some policies that would cause a problem for others if broken.  Please read and discuss these guidelines with your child/children.  Procedures are set forth so that every student can enjoy a school setting that is safe and well structured.  Parent involvement is essential in maintaining a positive environment.  The staff recognizes that positive and timely communications are necessary to insure that parents are informed.

Teachers and principals have the authority and responsibility, in accordance with WAC 180.40.235 and RCW 28A.58.100 to maintain a safe school environment.  Students also have the right to know the standard of behavior expected of them.

WEAPONS POLICY

It is a violation of district policy and state law for any person to carry a firearm or dangerous weapon on school premises, school-provided transportation or areas of other facilities being used exclusively for school activities.  It is also a violation of district policy for any person to carry or use in a threatening or disruptive manner any device, which resembles or is intended to look like a dangerous weapon.  Any such violations shall be taken seriously by school officials and will be subject to corrective action or punishment.  School officials shall notify the student’s parents or guardians and the appropriate law enforcement agency of known or suspected violations of this policy.  Students who violate this policy shall be subject to discipline, including a one-year expulsion for a violation involving a firearm.  The superintendent may modify the one-year expulsion on a case-by-case basis.

TOBACCO POLICY

District policy prohibits the use of tobacco by students, staff or visitors on school district property.  Possession or distribution of tobacco products by minors is prohibited.  School district property includes all district buildings, grounds and district-owned vehicles.  Students are subject to discipline for violations of this policy.

General Discipline Policy and expectation

Stevens School Rules:

  1. Maintain an orderly school operation: In this school you do not cause a problem for yourself or others. If you do cause a problem you will be guided into solving the problem. If you cannot or choose do not solve the problem, staff members will impose an appropriate consequence. (School facilities and classrooms must be free of behaviors that interfere with teaching and learning)
  2. Help students develop responsibility and character
  3. Help students learn that their decisions affect the quality of their lives and others.
  4. Students develop a Code of Conduct

Core beliefs, which guide enforcement of school rules:

  1. Every attempt will be made to maintain the dignity and self-respect of the student.
  2. Students will be guided and expected to solve their own problems, or ones they create, without creating problems for anyone else.
  3. Misbehavior will be handled with natural or logical consequences instead of punishment, whenever possible.
  4. Discipline will be considered an opportunity for personal growth, learning new behaviors, rather than a bad thing that should never happen.
  5. Students will be given opportunities to make decisions (have some control) within limits of adult’s terms.

Discipline Actions
Step by step approach to discipline:
Degree of severity:
I.  Graduated steps in the classroom
II.    Remove student from the group to another room or quiet area of your room or recovery room.

  •  Student is allowed to return when he/she can follow classroom procedures.
  • Teacher talks to student about the problem and together they come up with a new behavior plan.
  • Restrict student from area of infraction until the student identifies a new plan of action.
  • Student is restricted from the area of the infraction until the adult feels that another try is in order. The student then returns to the area on a day-to-day basis. (Example)“You may start using the playground again. Each good day you have earns you another day.
  • If to recovery room the students fills out a plan before returning to room.
  • Student makes a telephone call home to tell about his/her problem and plan for improvement or student writes an informal letter to parents describing actions or problem and includes a plan for improvement. The letter is to be signed and returned.

  • An appointment is made with the principal for consultation. The teacher, principal, and student form a team to discuss possible solutions or consequences.
  •  A parent conference is held.

  • Student is suspended from school until parent conference is held.
  • Student is placed upon a systematic suspension contract, being allowed to remain to school each day for as many minutes or hours as the child can live with an agreed-upon set of behavioral standards.

Serious issues: Suspensions

  1. When there is a behavior that poses a serious danger or threat to safety
  2. When the behavior is illegal
  3. When there are major disruptions to the educational process

Grievance Procedure for Discipline Action and Short-Term Suspension

Any student/parent/guardian who disagrees with the imposition of discipline or a short-term suspension shall have the right to an informal meeting with the building principal/designee for the purpose of resolving the grievance.  The employee whose action is being grieved shall be notified of the initiation of such a grievance as soon as reasonably possible.  During this meeting, the student/parent/guardian shall be subject to questioning by the principal/designee and shall be entitled to question school personnel involved in the matter being grieved.

After this school level grievance meeting, if the issue is not resolved, the student/ parent/guardian, upon giving two school business days’ prior notice to the Superintendent’s Office, shall have the right to present a written and/or oral grievance to the superintendent/designee.

If the issue is not resolved at the district level, the student/parent/guardian, upon giving two school business day’s prior notice to the Superintendent’s Office, shall have the right to present a written and/or oral grievance to the School Board during the Board’s next regular meeting.  The Board shall notify the student, parent/guardian of its response to the grievance within ten school business days after the date of that meeting.

The discipline or short-term suspension shall continue during the grievance procedure unless the principal/designee elects to postpone the action.

Immunizations and Health Services

All students are expected to be up to date with the immunizations required by Washington State law. The school nurse maintains records. The school nurse visits Stevens one and one half day(s) each week. She is on call for medical emergencies. Please feel free to call at any time if you have a question that she might help you with regarding your child’s health. Mrs. Easter is the school nurse and may be reached at 538-2100

Medicines

The parent and physician must complete medication forms if your child is to take medication of any type during school hours.  All medication and
completed forms must be turned into the office.  Medicine must always be in the original container.  It will be kept locked in the school office.
School staff will supervise the administration of the medication.  A form is provided at the end of the handbook.  Additional copies may be picked up in the office.  Please do not send your child to school with any medication
(such as aspirin, cough syrup, etc.)...It may get into the wrong hands.

Student Attendance

Parents are requested to notify the school in the morning when their child will not be in school that day (538-2150). This is important for your child’s safety. When a child is not in attendance and the office has not been called, we will attempt to contact the home. This is done out of concern for the well being of the student.

Students who are to be dismissed early, must be checked out from the office. Children must be signed in and out. Teachers will not dismiss a student from the classroom without a call from the office.

Children who are 5 years old on or before August 31 are eligible for enrollment in kindergarten. Compulsory school attendance is required of Washington children between the ages of 8 and 18, or who have not completed the 9th grade.

                        .
Visitors

All doors, except the main entrance on South Farragut Street, are kept locked during the school day for the safety of our students. Visitors, please report to the office and sign in. If you have business within the general school area you will be issued a Visitor’s Pass. Your cooperation with this policy will be greatly appreciated.

General Information

1. If a student has been ill and parents are requesting that he/she not be
allowed outside for recess or noon playtime, a dated note MUST be sent to
your student's teacher each day.

2. Students not eating breakfast are not to arrive at school before 8:15 in
the morning.  Arriving early can lead to problems.  There is no
supervision available for students before that time.  Lunch pails, duffel bags, etc. are the students' responsibility on the playground.

3. Students who walk home after school are asked to leave as soon as school is dismissed.

4. Crossing guards cross students at busy intersections for their safety. Please cross streets where directed so injuries can be avoided.

5. Parents are encouraged to visit school whenever they can.  Please call the principal a day in advance to arrange a classroom visitation.  If visiting, please check in at the office and pick up a visitor's button before entering the halls or a classroom.  For safety, all visitors must wear a visitor's button.  This identifies authorized visitors for our staff and students.

6. If you have something to deliver to your child, please bring it to the office and we will see that he/she gets it.

7. Please meet your child outside the school or in our new parent room not in the hall.  This helps to maintain a quiet and undisturbed learning atmosphere through the end of the school day.

Lost and Found

A Lost and Found area is located in the multipurpose room. Each year many valuable items of clothing wind up in this area because there is no identification on the article. Please take a minute and mark your child’s belongings with their initials so that these may be returned to the owner promptly. Jackets and lunch boxes are the items most likely to become lost.  Please have your child check if he/she has lost an item, because of space we will need to clean the lost and found out every other month.

Student Insurance

Student Accident and Dental Insurance is available. Brochures are sent home with each student on the first day of school. This program is made available as a convenience to parents and has no connection with the Aberdeen School District #5. It is entirely voluntary.

Emergency School Closure

Winter weather and school closure notices are given on local radio stations shortly after 6:00 AM during periods of inclement weather.

Parents may come to the school at anytime and sign their children out. Please note that students cannot be released to anyone other than a parent unless prior authorization is given in writing.

Student Pictures

We have a new company taking student pictures this year. Picture packet and pricing information will be sent home approximately one week in advance. Every child will have a picture taken regardless of whether they are purchasing a packet. Individual pictures are used in the school records.

Stevens Parent Teacher Student Organization
PTSO is a parent-teacher group who genuinely care about the welfare of our school and our students.  PTSO meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM in various classrooms. This is usually a business meeting that discusses and plans activities and addresses concerns of the group. It is also a way for parents to meet and work together for the welfare of our school and our students.  This group sponsors many of the special activities, which occur throughout the year.  Please watch our newsletters for announcement of activities. We invite all of you to become a part of this caring, fun, encouraging and important group. Your ideas and efforts are needed to make Stevens School a positive part of the community.

Dress & Grooming

Stevens encourages students to dress comfortably and appropriately for school.  Students who do not comply with the dress guidelines will first be given the opportunity to call home for a change of clothes.  If a parent is unable to be reached, students will be given appropriate clothing to change into.  Below are the expectations of students attending Stevens.

All articles of clothing must be free of any references to tobacco, drugs, alcohol, sex, gangs, profanity or anything disruptive to the learning process.

Students are not allowed to wear hats, including scarves in the building unless needed for a medical reason.

Some items that are considered inappropriate for school are as follows:

  • Skirts, pants or shorts that show the midriff
  • Extremely tight or baggy pants
  • Shirts that are extremely low cut and/or tight

If your clothing causes a problem for someone else you will be asked to solve that problem.

Reasonable regulations governing the appearance of students, participating in voluntary extracurricular activities, shall be established by the staff member in charge of the activity, and shall be communicated or made available to all students who choose to participate in such voluntary extracurricular activities.

After School Sports Program

The Aberdeen sports program at the elementary level places great emphasis upon participation and sportsmanship. Every attempt is made to insure that each child, regardless of athletic skill or ability, has a fair amount of playing time.

Sports programs that are offered in the fall include flag football and volleyball.  Both of these sports are open for both boys and girls in the 5th and 6th grades. The next season begins with girls’ basketball season in November and boys’ basketball season in January. Each season lasts eight weeks.  The spring sports program is an intramural program with activities that vary depending upon student interest.

Music

Band is offered as an elective for our 5th and 6th grade students during the school year.  Orchestra is an elective for our 5th and 6th grade students.  Our instrumental music teachers will be sending home more information on this program.  Vocal music instruction is provided for students in grades K - 6.

School Records Update

Please provide our office with your correct contact information.  We need to know where you can be reached during the school day in case of emergencies while your child is in school.

Student Government

We elect student body officers twice a year.  These students meet and decide special events and help run our school.
