August 4, 2016

Dear A.J. West Family:

The 2016-2017 school year is approaching.  I hope that you and your family have enjoyed the summer, and that you are looking forward to the new school year as much as we are.  I am writing this letter to let you know your child’s classroom placement for the upcoming year, and to inform you of some of the exciting things that lie ahead in September.

We are very happy to announce that families will not need to purchase classroom supplies for students.  The school will provide items that are customarily on classroom supply lists.  Parents will need to provide backpacks, shoes for PE, and earbuds or headphones (for computers).

A.J. West is embarking on implementing a school-wide AVID Elementary program.  This program is affiliated with programs that are currently being employed at the junior high and high school.  The purpose of AVID is to help all students to become college-ready through organization, higher-level thinking skills and rigor.  We will begin implementation this year in grades 3-6, and will gradually bring the program to grades K-2 in subsequent school years.  There will be information coming throughout the school year.

We will also be establishing a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports program (PBIS) at A.J. West to continue to make our school an even safer learning environment for students.

We will be welcoming some new teachers this year to A.J. West.  Mrs. Powell and Miss Soderstrom will be teaching first grade.  Mr. Walker will be joining our second-grade team this year.   Ms. Fesler will be teaching Developmental Resource.

We are upgrading our security.  New fencing will be added to the Second Street entrance of our playground, providing complete enclosure of our campus.

Summer School begins Monday, August 8, and goes through August 25.

Our office will open beginning Monday, August 22.  Office hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Our Open House is Tuesday, September 6 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.  We will be providing refreshments and a chance for students to meet their teachers, learn about the upcoming school year and see their new classrooms.  The first day of school is Wednesday, September 7.

Letters are coming soon in the mail from A.J. West with your child's classroom assignment.

We are looking forward to a successful school year for your student. Student success depends on a strong partnership between parents and the school.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office at 360-538-2130.

John Meers,
 Principal, A.J. West
