NOT OFFICIAL MINUTES
The regular meeting of the School Board convened at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room at Aberdeen High School. Members present were Sandra Bielski, Jennifer Hagen, Christi Boora and Jordan Wolfe, along with Superintendent Thomas Opstad and 52 patrons and staff. A work study at Miller Junior High School preceded the meeting.
The Board conducted a public hearing to consider comment on a proposed extension of the Capital Projects Fund in the 2012-2013 budget.There was no comment.
The Board approved the Consent Agenda, which included the minutes of the regular meeting conducted on May 7, 2013; April payroll vouchers totaling $1,977,045.07; General Fund vouchers totaling $957,613.91; ASB Fund vouchers totaling $33,223,36 and Private Purpose Trust Fund vouchers totaling $202.19; an out-of-state/overnight trip request for students in SkillsUSA at Aberdeen High School to travel to the national competition at Kansas City, Mo., June23-29; and acceptedgifts to the district for the Leadership Fund at Stevens Elementary School totaling $685.00 in memory of Jackie Persson and a $25,000.00 bequest from the estate of Helen Swanson to benefit capital expenditures in support of high school athletics.
Amelia McIntosh, Alejandra Cabrales, Ryan Thornton, Marisol Chavez, Riley Schreck and Veek Cheema, members of the Renaissance Team at Aberdeen High School, presented information about their ongoing “Let’s Draw the Line” campaign regarding teen exposure to drugs and alcohol.
Seniors Kelsey Scott, Erick Sanchez, Nichole Pence, Jasper Billie and Lindsey Quintana, who are among the students in the inaugural AVID class, shared information about their personal experiences, challenges and success in the program.
Superintendent Opstad shared information about year-end activities, noting that Senior Boards are taking place Wednesday and Thursday this week; the Silver & Gold Banquet is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Log Pavilion; the Hall of Fame Night is set for 6 p.m. June 6 in the Commons; Baccalaureate is set for 5 p.m. June 9 in the Auditorium; AVID Senior Celebration is set for 6-8 p.m. in the Log Pavilion, the moving up assembly is set for 2 p.m. June 12 in Sam Benn Gym; Harbor High graduation takes place at 6 p.m. June 13 at Harbor High and Aberdeen High School graduation takes place at 6 p.m June 14 at Stewart Field.
The Board accepted for first reading, the following texts and instructional materials:
The text HandWriting Without Tears by Jan Z. Olsen for use in preschool and kindergarten classes;
The novel In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner and published by Simon & Schuster for use in English classes at Aberdeen High School; and
Three texts published by the Carpenter’s International Training fund for use in CTE classes at Aberdeen High School, including Project Book 1 for Wood Tech classes; Project Book 2 for Residential Construction classes, and One Trade/Many Careers for use in both Wood Tech and Residential Construction classes.
Business Manager David Herrington presented the Fiscal Status Report for April.
The Board approved Resolution 2013-05 Extending the Capital Budget for payment in 2012-13 of vouchers for the McDermoth Wall Repair Project that came in after the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
The Board discussed funds being set aside to pay the upcoming QZAB payments – the zero-interest Qualified Zone Academy Bonds that come due in 2017 and 2018.
The Board approved the TPEP letter of agreement with the Aberdeen Education Association outlining the implementation plan for the new teacher evaluation system.
The Board declared certain computers, devices and attachments with no remaining value to the District as surplus.
The Board declared a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL with no remaining value to the district as surplus. It had been used for instruction in the automotive program.
The Board declared a portion of the playground equipment at Central Park Elementary with no remaining value to the district as surplus .
The next meeting of the Board is set for 7 p.m.Tuesday, June 4, in the Community Room at Aberdeen High School.A work study will begin at 6:00 p.m.
Following an executive session, the Board approved personnel matters.
