A Great Week in the Aberdeen SD!

We have several Math Olympiad Teams that will be forming at our elementary schools and Miller Junior High over the next week.  Teams will be working with mentors over the next few months to compete in the state competition on Saturday, May 5,2012, at Aberdeen HS.  We plan to grow and expand this program over the next few years.  For more information on the State Olympiad, check out the following website - http://www.wsmc.net/olympiad/

I spent Friday afternoon in our AVID classrooms at Aberdeen High School.  I was able to observe how tutorial is structured, learn how students work with their tutors, and invite AVID students with a 3.5 GPA or higher to a special luncheon next Thursday.  It is a great program that helps all students work toward their college dreams.
We will be placing an announcement in the high school bulletin next week to have students who are bilingual sign up to take the new World Language Proficiency Exam.  This is an exam where students who are fluent in a second language are assessed in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Students with a high enough score can receive credits toward high school graduation.  We are limited in the number and preference will be given to seniors and juniors if those interested exceeds our capacity.  The exam is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 2012 beginning at 10:00 AM.
A counselor breakfast for all schools involved in the Twin Harbors, Skills Center Branch took place on Friday morning. Several schools were in attendance and toured the Medical Careers facility, Industrial Engineering, and Automotive Technology.
Our district has a team working on selecting a model and implementing the new teacher and principal evaluation (TPEP) system for our district.  We will be sending teachers and principals to a workshop at the ESD in Olympia on February 28.  There are several bills currently in the Legislature also addressing this topic during this session.
Have a great weekend. Thank you, Tom
