    The Mission of AVID

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

    What is AVID?
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college preparatory program for students that are often the first in their family to attend college.  It is an elective class taught during the regular school day. The AVID program provides ongoing support for students by developing strong study skills, work ethic, note taking, time management, and college planning.  AVID students will challenge themselves by taking higher level courses and being involved in school and community activities.

Students apply to be in the AVID program and are interviewed prior to entering the program. At Miller we accept new applicants throughout the year.  AVID has an ongoing waiting list that we use to fill openings in the class at the end of each quarter. Once a student applies for AVID they remain on the waiting list.

At Miller we are working to bring the strategies of AVID schoolwide so that all students have access to rigorous course work. This includes such techniques as marking the text while reading, taking Cornell notes, and participating in collaborative discussions.
