Aberdeen High School sent nine students to the 2023 state SkillsUSA competition in Tacoma. The team came home with five medals -- including two state championships. Above, from left, Henry Nelson, Charlie Ancich, Alaura Beeson, Keara Burns, Ayden Giffin, Tute'sum Baller, Dustin Olson, Isai Renteria and Asher Holen.

Keara Burns, left, a junior, earned her second state championship in Residential & Commercial Appliance Technology. Keara represented Washington state at the national competition last year and earned the bronze medal. Junior Charlie Ancich won the gold medal in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Burns and Ancich both advance to the national competition in Atlanta, Ga., in July.

Senior Isai Renteria (right photo on the left), won the silver medal in Electrical Construction Wiring. They're hired! The Boeing Co. had a strong presence at this year's competition and students had the opportunity to interview for jobs. Both Renteria and senior Asher Holen (right photo on the right) received and accepted job offers that will focus on their electrical wiring skills. Advisor Chuck Veloni reports they both begin employment after graduation.

Chuck Veloni, Aberdeen's longtime advisor for SkillsUSA, received the state CTE Champions Award for his influential and proactive advocacy of Career and Technical Education.

Also noteworthy, the state director for SkillsUSA is an Aberdeen High School graduate. Karmen (Ayres) Warner was one of Mr. Veloni's students and a SkillsUSA standout during her high school career.
