Greetings! I teach General Music Kindergarten through Sixth Grade at A. J. West Elementary School. I am very happy to be working with your student. Our concert dates are posted on the building and school district calendar pages. I send home notices to families announcing concerts one week before the concert. In Kindergarten and first grade we are working on the basics of music including learning to read music, keeping steady beat, distinguishing beat from rhythm, singing high and low notes, singing fast and slow and soft and loud. We will build our music vocabulary over the school year while providing opportunities for students to move to music and experience many different genres. In grades 2-6 we build on elementary concepts and develop skills in music interpretation and literacy. My students will have opportunities to improvise using barred instruments from the ORFF Instrumentary and students will have an opportunity to beat box and improvise using applications on both iPad and iPod. At the beginning of the year all grade levels prepare for Veteran's Day by singing patriotic music. The next few performances focus on seasonal music and world music followed by a celebration of the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. Students in 3rd through sixth grades will play glockenspiel (German Bells), Baroque Soprano Recorders or compose music using a computer based digital audio studio. In the spring we compose music, choreograph and video record performances.
