Aberdeen's historic Stewart Field has seen athletic contests staged on it since 1905 (city maps show an athletic field there that early). Stewart Field and the land surrounding it were owned by the Stewart family who were a pioneer family in Aberdeen. It was the site of their homestead, a brick yard, and a shipyard in the early 1900's. The Stewarts eventually donated their land and athletic field to the Aberdeen School District in the 1920's. The school district has run the field, and built Robert Gray Elementary on lands near the field. The old Robert Gray school is now the athletic locker rooms and serves the needs of Wrestling, Football, and Soccer as a practice site. There is a new Robert Gray Elementary on the north side of Stewart Field currently.

In the best of times, the field was not a great playing surface, but recently the field had degenerated into a very unreliable surface to host athletic contests on. In 2008, a group of community members and school district personnel formed "Save Stewart Field" whose goal was to re-surface Stewart Field with an all-weather surface, and to make modifications in the Concession Stands and restrooms. Other improvements would be completed as resources could be found. The group was able to obtain grants from LISC/NFL and the Ben B. Cheney Foundation, along with Capital monies from the school districts and private donations from local alumni, and businesses and met their goal of turfing the field. On top of that, a new scoreboard, goalposts, and a set of lightweight portable soccer goals were obtained. A much needed remodel of the ladies restroom was also completed. The field was opened officially on September 4, 2010 with the 105th playing of the Hoquiam-Aberdeen football game. After brief dedication ceremonies, the Bobcat Football team christened the field properly when Alberto Garcia ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, sparking the Cats to beat their archrivals 20-0.
