• Welcome to the 2019-20 School Year

It with pleasure that I begin my third year with the Aberdeen School District to serve as your superintendent.  This is a great school district, with excellent staff, in a wonderful community. There are many exciting things going on in our district, and I believe this will be a great year!

The 6th grades are moving to Miller this year, so that we have more classrooms available in the elementary schools for smaller class sizes.  Miller Junior High is now a comprehensive middle school with 6th-8th grades, and a full complement of courses and extra-curriculars. I want to acknowledge our amazing maintenance and operations staff who have worked so hard this summer to prepare for the 6th grade move to Miller. In addition, I want to recognize our wonderful teachers and administrators at Miller for preparing for the transition, and welcoming all of our junior high students.

Another exciting thing is that we will be moving forward with steps towards building a new Stevens School. The design of the new school will include a vertical tsunami evacuation center that can support students at both Stevens and Miller. Please look for additional information about this needed construction project in South Aberdeen.

Over the past two years we have focused on building support systems for students with both academics and behavior. This year we will be incorporating these supports into a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) at each of our schools. This includes the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) framework for a positive school climate with clear behavioral expectations that are supported with consistency from all adults. The PBIS framework will be enhanced with explicit supports for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) for our students, as we know it is a critical foundation for learning in school and in life.  In the area of academics, we will be utilizing information about student learning to identify when academic needs arise during the school year, and provide prompt academic supports as part of our MTSS.

We look forward to the new science curriculum which was adopted last year for our secondary students. This year we will be conducting a pilot for mathematics curriculum this year.

This is our second year transitioning into the new state funding model for schools.  We will continue our cost-saving efforts in order to maximize efficiencies and reduce waste whenever possible, without compromising on quality education for our students. We will continue to navigate the challenges, and live within our means. Our Budget Advisory Committee will be continuing to meet throughout the year, and updates will be posted on the website.

I am looking forward to seeing our students in classrooms, on the playground and at the many wonderful activities in our district. I am excited to see many parents at Open Houses, PTO meetings, and other events throughout the year. My door is always open, so please let me know if ever want to discuss a concern or share an idea about how we can improve! Please be sure to keep abreast of District news and events on our website and Facebook site.

I look forward to working together this year!

    Sincerely, Alicia Henderson
