From Pre Bond to Construction -- The Future for Stevens Elementary

  • Stevens Elementary has a long and proud history for serving the families of South Aberdeen. The Aberdeen School District is honored to continue that tradition as we begin to look to the future of Stevens Elementary. This page will be dedicated to keeping our families and the entire community of Aberdeen informed of our progress toward the eventual replacement of Stevens Elementary.  We will provide timelines, progress toward developing a bond proposal for the Aberdeen School Board and all the steps required to construct our new school. If you have any questions, comments or want to know more please contact either Mr Lewis, the principal of Stevens or Elyssa Lowderback, the Executive Director of Business & Operations for the Aberdeen School District.

On this page you will find:  Timelines, progress reports, meeting agendas, bond information, data gathered and opportunities for public input. Come back often and watch the process from start to finish.

  • Site Selection

Posted by Arnie Lewis on 4/12/2018 7:00:00 PM

Site Selection is far more complex than most of us think. A couple months ago, I would have thought it was as easy as choosing an appropriate piece of property or simply tearing down the old school and building a new one. We have learned a lot. The process began with creating the right team to begin a survey of possible locations. We then met with the architects from TCF to begin scoring and ranking the possible sites through specifically selected criteria that can impact the success of a project. We then held our first public forum to gather community input on those same criteria. We had a strong turnout and received great feedback from the group. Participants had many questions about site selection and shared what they value about where the new Stevens Elementary school should be located. Now the group moves to the next phase which is to place the appropriate value on each of the criteria based on all the data collected. Some important factors that showed in both the community input and the steering committee input is the value we all place on keeping our students safe from danger and out of the inundation zone caused by severe flooding and Tsunamis.  A number of other factors must also be considered including the cost of site preparation and infrastructure improvements, access to emergency services and school bus routes and disruption to natural wetlands and staying within the budget allocation. Like most projects there is always give and take as we narrow down the choices. Each person places a different value on all the factors involved and some factors carry a heavier weight in the final decision (like funding). The final recommendation to the Aberdeen School Board then is based on huge amount of input and competing factors that result in the best combination of the strict requirements of new school construction and the public interest.

  • The Process

Posted by Arnie Lewis on 3/9/2018 8:00:00 PM

We have started the process of planning for the bond to replace Stevens Elementary. I have learned a great deal from the staff at Stevens about all the work that has been put into this process. In these blog posts I will attempt to share all the micro and macro steps we are engaged with in an attempt to narrate and memorialize the process for everyone both involved with the process and with a passion for Stevens Elementary.
