    Dear A.J. West Family:

The 2017-2018 school year is approaching.  I hope that you and your family have enjoyed the summer, and that you are looking forward to the new school year as much as we are.

This year, as last year, families will not need to purchase classroom supplies for students.  The school will provide items that are customarily on classroom supply lists.  Parents will need to provide backpacks, shoes for PE, and earbuds or headphones (for computers).

A.J. West is entering our second year of implementation of the AVID program.  This program is affiliated with programs that are currently being employed at the junior high and high school.  The purpose of AVID is to help all students to become college-ready through organization, higher-level thinking skills and rigor.  We will continue implementation this year in grades 3-6, and will gradually bring the program to grades K-2 in subsequent school years.  Each classroom will be “adopting” a college this year as part of the AVID program.

We will also be continuing implementation of Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports program (PBIS) at A.J. West to continue to make our school an even safer learning environment for students.

We will be welcoming some new teachers this year to A.J. West.  Ms. Turner will be teaching kindergarten.  Mrs. Hoffman will be teaching second grade and Mrs. Swantek will be teaching third grade.

Our office will open beginning Tuesday, August 15.  Office hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Our Open House is Tuesday, August 29 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.  We will be providing refreshments and a chance for students to meet their teachers, learn about the upcoming school year and see their new classrooms.  The first day of school is Wednesday, August 30.

Families will receive letters the second week of August with their students' classroom assignments.  Class lists will be posted in the lobby the week of August 14.

We are looking forward to a successful school year for your student. Student success depends on a strong partnership between parents and the school.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office at 360-538-2130.
