Dear A.J. West Family:
The 2018-2019 school year is approaching. I hope that you and your family have enjoyed the summer, and that you are looking forward to the new school year as much as we are. I am writing this letter to let you know your child’s classroom placement for the upcoming year, and to inform you of some of the exciting things that lie ahead this fall.
This year, as in the past two years, families will not need to purchase classroom supplies for students. The school will provide items that are customarily on classroom supply lists. Parents will need to provide backpacks, shoes for PE, and earbuds or headphones (for computers).
A.J. West is entering our third year of implementation of the AVID program. This program is affiliated with programs that are currently being employed at the junior high and high school. The purpose of AVID is to help all students to become college-and-career ready through organization, higher-level thinking skills and rigor. We will continue implementation in grades 3-6, and will be introducing AVID strategies to our K-2 classrooms this year. Each classroom has “adopted” a college this year as part of the AVID program.
We will also be continuing implementation of Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports program (PBIS) at A.J. West to continue to make our school an even safer and inspiring learning environment for students.
We will be welcoming some new teachers this year to A.J. West. Mrs. Polmateer will be teaching first grade. Mrs. Barlow will be joining our staff as a third-grade teacher. Mr. Potter will be teaching our Life Skills program. We do have some teachers who will also be known by different last names this year. Miss Ulakovich will be now be Mrs. Hartt. Ms. Olsen will be Mrs. Mays. Miss Busby will be known as Mrs. Lewis. Mrs. Weitzel will be Ms. Hunsaker.
Our office will open beginning Monday, August 13. Office hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Our Open House is Tuesday, August 28 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. We will be providing refreshments and a chance for students to meet their teachers, learn about the upcoming school year and see their new classrooms. The first day of school is Wednesday, August 29.
Your student’s teacher for the 2018-2019 school year is __________________. Class lists will be posted in the lobby the week of August 13.
We are looking forward to a successful school year for your student. Student success depends on a strong partnership between parents and the school. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office at 360-538-2130.
