Late Starts and Closures
Winter Weather Reminder – Staff Expectations for Delays & Closures
Dear District Staff:
This is a reminder of our district expectations when weather impacts the school schedule. Please review the guidance below and check with your supervisor if you have questions.
Notifications:
Staff and families will be notified of a late start or emergency closure by an automated phone call, email, and/or text. Notifications will also be posted to local media sources including Seattle news stations and the Aberdeen School District Facebook page. When possible closures and delays are announced by 6:00 am on FlashAlert (you can sign up for those notifications). Occasionally, circumstances change quickly that make late announcements unavoidable. Please check these sources before traveling. If unsure, contact your supervisor before leaving home.
Weather Make-Up Days
The 2025-26 School calendar includes two weather make-up days that will be used if school is closed due to inclement weather or an emergency closure.
If school is closed, staff will not be required to use leave for that day, as it will be made up later using one of the scheduled weather make-up days.
Reporting Expectations by Union Group
AEA

When school is delayed, employees are encouraged to report at their regular time.
-
Must be in the buildings at least 30 minutes before students arrive.
PSE

When school is closed or delayed, employees may use emergency leave (deducted from sick leave), flex time, or unpaid time. Flex time must be made up within 10 working days and arranged and approved by the supervisor.
Maintenance & Operations – Food and Transportation:
-
If less than one hour of notice is given and employees arrive but are not needed, they receive a minimum of two hours’ pay.
-
When school is closed, time is unpaid unless using vacation, emergency leave (deducted from sick leave) or personal leave.
-
If an extreme emergency is declared and employees are asked to leave work, emergency leave rules apply.
Safety First
Please use good judgment regarding personal safety during winter travel. Notify your supervisor if conditions prevent you from reporting to work. Also, be sure to enter your absence in Skyward and Frontline.
Supervisors remain your primary point of contact for any questions. Thank you for your continued flexibility and commitment to student and staff safety.
