GEAR UP Week
September 23-29th is National Gear Up Week, and I am encouraging you to join thousands of students, teachers, and parents to celebrate it. National GEAR UP Week is an opportunity for you to raise awareness in your community about the positive impact GEAR UP is having locally. It's a time to engage all your friends, family, and peers to commemorate your hard work and the progress students are making towards achieving their life-long dream of going to college!
You may be wondering what Gear Up is, it is a community of former teachers that are preparing students for college, and helping students with schoolwork. An example of a former teacher/principal helping students, is Mr. Salstrom. He was the former principal for Miller Junior High, but is now helping students like me with our math. As an honor student, my math is extremely hard and I know I can always rely on him to help me .
At school some things you may discuss during your Gear Up week are talking about the origins of Gear Up, plan goals for college, and play Kahoots and Bingo games on Gear Up subjects. You also may have a motivational speaker at your school such as Miller Junior High does with former Assistant State Superintendent, Erin Jones. Jones tells us about her life and tough things she went through and also inspiring things to get us to work harder in school and mostly life.
Gear Up is a very important part of Miller Junior High because it aids all students with ANYTHING they are struggling in. So if a student was struggling in Science let's say, the Gear Up staff would be right there to support the student and help them bring their grade up so that they could get into the college of their choosing. If you're school does not partake in the Gear Up program, I highly suggest they do so their students can receive the great privileges that students all around the country have.
