Principal’s message
Our school continues to celebrate our wonderful and amazing students! Daily, we draw winners of students who make good choices. Monthly, we have a Student of the Month Recognition Ceremony. We have spirit week starting on October 31st! Our After School Program has started on our school yearbook. Our student store opened and periodically hosts fun events for our students and staff during lunch. In October and November, we issued a daily Gratitude Challenge as we near Thanksgiving.
Meet Stephanie Medina! We are so excited to add Stephanie to our Harbor Learning Center staff. Stephanie works in Room 3 with Emma Wimberley. She checks on our English Learners students, interprets when needed in Spanish, and assists our students and families with other concerns. You can contact her at (360) 538-2185 or smedina@asd5.org
Spirit Week - Oct 31-Nov 4 Don’t forget that all spirit day outfits need to be school appropriate. Have fun, but make good choices!
Monday - Costume Day Tuesday - Pajama Day
Wednesday - Pink Day Thursday - Twins Day
Friday - Anything but a Backpack Day
Counseling Office - Kasi Turner
We loved meeting all the families during Student Led Conferencing. Don’t forget students and families can log into Skyward like they did at MJH and AHS to check their progress in each class. Having trouble with Skyward? Check with me, the secretaries, or Emma in the computer lab. Do you have questions about your student’s progress toward graduation? I am meeting with each Grade 12 student and communicating with their parents/guardians. Does your student need someone to listen and assist with problem solving? I can do that, too. I also assist families in accessing the BHR counseling services offered on campus. - Kasi Turner, HLC Counselor, kturner@asd5.org
Before and After School Program (Mon-Thur, 7:00 - 8:00 & 2:45 - 4:45)
Harbor High’s After School Program is growing, and we would love to have YOU join as well! Our After School Program focuses on Social Emotional Learning, Academic Enrichment, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). Our Yearbook club started, and we always welcome new members. Interested in DND, GSA, or Karaoke? Let Emma know!
Student Store
The Dragon Cafe team worked hard to start up operations and prepare for the Grand Opening on the 21st of October! The store was crowded as students and staff showed up to experience the store. Smoothies, coffee, Italian sodas, pizza, and warm cookies were just some of the items for sale. Our students with spare change love the option to get snacks here at school. Our students working in the store are getting valuable life long job skills, too. This is a positive addition to our growing school.
Technology message- Emma Wimberley
Over the next few months, our Harbor High students will be switching from Lenovo Chromebooks to Dell Laptops. These Dell Laptops have a few less restrictions, and students are able to use Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. This process will be slow, but do not be surprised if your student comes home with a different device than normal!
Open Doors/GED Program
We are in year two of our Open Doors/GED program, and it is very successful! Last year 30 students earned their GED. This year 5 students have already earned their GED’s! We have over FORTY-FIVE students currently enrolled in the GED program and room for more! If your student is 16 years of age and behind in credits, they might be eligible to enroll in our GED program. Many of our local youth got behind in high school credits during COVID and are anxious to find a way to complete their education and move on to community college, a job, or technical schools. GED might be the right fit for you or someone you know. The flexible in person time commitment of students working towards their GED allows our GED students to work during the day. Our new GED staff member, Tedd White, is working well with our GED students and is available to answer any questions you might have! If interested please contact Tedd White at twhite@asd5.org.
Grays Harbor Academy Information
Our school hosts our district’s online school, Grays Harbor Academy. We have over seventy K-12 students enrolled in this online option. It is important to talk to our principal or school counselor before considering this change. We contract with an online school, Edgenuity. This online option is very different from the distance learning offered in the 2020-2021 school year or during our temporary switch to distance learning in January of 2022. It is a 100% ONLINE school with ONLINE teachers and the expectations are VERY HIGH! It works well with students who are self motivated, self starters, and love working on a computer for over 5 hours a day.
