Summer GED Support

We are finishing year two of our Open Doors/GED program, and it is very successful!  This year over 50 students have already earned their GED’s!  We have 60 + students currently enrolled in the GED program and room for more! If your student is 16 years of age and behind in credits, they might be eligible to enroll in our GED program.  During the summer, our GED program is available during the regular HLC Summer School hours  Monday- Friday  8 to noon from June 16 through July 7 (closed on June 19, July 3, and July 4).  After that, GED support is available by appointment.  Students can continue to schedule GED testing during the Summer months.  Contact Tedd White to schedule an appointment at twhite@asd5.org

Next School Year, 2023-2024

Harbor Learning Center programs are choice programs. If you are planning on returning to your student’s assigned/home school for the 23-24 school year, please contact the Harbor Learning Center (HLC) AND the school to which you are returning.   We have a wait list of new students for 23-24!  Know someone that wants to take advantage of Harbor Jr Sr High, Grays Harbor Academy, or our Open Doors/GED program?  Tell them now to fill out an application and get on the wait list.  If our office is closed, applications can be found on our school website.  Families can email the applications to the school principal lgriebel@asd5.org  Families can also drop off the application at our main office and use the drop box at the door if the office is closed.

First day of school on August 30, 2023

Our first day of school will be on August 30!  Like the last two years, this day is an orientation day for our families.  We will be open 8-1 for orientation activities.  Come meet your teachers, verify your student’s schedule, check out a chromebook, sign back to school paperwork, and get your school photo taken.  It is a fun way to start off the school year.

Changes continue at the Harbor Learning Center

We saw lots of changes in the 21-22 school year as we reopened as the Harbor Learning Center, returned to full time, added grades 7/8, added Grays Harbor Academy, and started an Open Doors/GED program.  We embraced a stricter cell phone policy and watched as students significantly decreased their personal screen time and increased the time spent on school related tasks.  We eliminated the traditional morning ten minute break.

More changes came the 22-23 school year.  Our cell phone policy was modified so that each staff person set the rules in their room.  More student-planned events returned which included the addition of a Student Store.  Our school board approved our ASB Constitution and ASB is returning here!   Students were not allowed to step off campus to the alley or sit in their cars during lunch time.  The Harbor Learning Center enforced our school district’s policy on “no smoking and no vaping”  just like our other district schools (and all schools in the state)!

Hold on to your hats as more changes are planned for the 23-24 school year. Changes to lunch time expectations!  Did you know that from the time the bell rings to leave class and be back in class, students have 40 minutes for lunch?  Our school district policy states all schools have a “closed campus.”  This means random people can’t show up at a school and hang out.  It also means that students can’t come and go throughout the day.   We offer free lunch to all of our students.  We also have vending machines AND a student store.  We have microwaves available to students if they need to warm up food they bring.   When the weather cooperates, students can choose to go outside during lunch, as long as they stay on campus and are visible to the supervisor.  Several places on campus are available for students to hang out with their friends, and there are even lunchtime activities!  Starting next year 2023-2024, students under the age of 18 will not be allowed to leave campus during lunch.  If students are 18 or older and signing out for lunch, they are expected to return to class on time or they will lose that privilege.

Staff changes for 2023-2024

We have some new staff for the next school year!  We are sharing two staff with AHS- Jeremy Rayne and Evelyn Hamilton.  We are welcoming Ann Dejka from AHS to assist with GED testing.  We wish Robert Sutlovich, Charles Stover, and Karen Ellingson luck in their new  positions next fall.   We will miss them.
