We are so excited for our THIRD YEAR as the Harbor Learning Center, HLC. This campus is a busy learning center for ages 0-21! The Hopkins Building contains:
- Aberdeen Schools’ Therapy Office
- Promise Private Day Care and Preschool
- Aberdeen School District’s Hopkins Preschool
- Snug Harbor Day Care (Aberdeen School District’s Teen Parenting Program and ASD Employee Daycare)
- Grays Harbor Academy (Aberdeen School District’s OnLine/Virtual K-12 School)
- Open Doors/GED Program
- Harbor Junior/Senior High School
Harbor Junior/Senior High Grade 7 and 8- Year Three!
Our mission is to provide a smaller, more personalized/individualized learning environment for a few of our district's 7th and 8th graders. Our district's junior high, Miller Junior High, is an amazing, vibrant school! However, its large size (750-800 students) promotes an active and energetic place that might not be the optimum learning environment for a few of our district's youth. Let us know if someone in your family is interested in applying for the junior high component of Harbor Junior Senior High. Our middle school students are together in the same classes, but they have 5 different teachers. They travel from room to room like our high school students do. Some of our 8th grade students take classes with high school students which gives them the opportunity to earn high school credit. Our middle school students also have the same lunch period as the high school students.
ASB (Associated Student Body) Activities!
We are thrilled to see the return of ASB to the Harbor Learning Center. Our constitution was approved by our school board at the end of the 22-23 school year. Congratulations to our newly elected officers for the 23-24 school year: Co-Presidents- CeCe Wood and Adrien Tripp; Vice President- Sophie Rasler; Secretary- Tobi Blacketer; and Treasurer- Mikyla Gunter.
Our next steps will be to elect/select class representatives for our council and work on an ASB budget. ASB will increase the student voice in our school and allow our school to do fundraising and planned activities. Go, Dragons!
Meet our new HLC staff:
Expect some new staff members at our school this year. We are sharing two staff with Aberdeen High School- Jeremy Rayne, Junior High Math/Science, and Evelyn Hamilton, Campus Supervision. Joining us full-time at HLC is Ann Deyka- GED Testing. We are still working to fill a position or two of classified staff, so we will have some other new faces!
2023-2024 School Supplies
Our district will provide school supplies for any student who needs school supplies. HLC does not require many individual student supplies, and we provide supplies to students if needed to successfully complete an assignment. IF you want to purchase your own supplies you might look for: Backpack (we do not have school lockers), Paper, Pencils, Blue/Black Pens, Highlighter, Markers, Colored Pencils, and a Binder (something to keep your student's papers/contracts organized).
Back to School Marketplace @AHS on 8/19/23 1-4 PM (Clothing, Shoes, and Backpacks and School Supplies)
2023-2024 Bell Schedule
Our bell schedule is ALMOST the same as last year. You will find it at the end of this newsletter. We have 7 class periods which include advisory. All students are in the same thirty-minute lunch period. First period starts 5 minutes later than last year; that is the only change. Also, our kitchen staff will be serving a grab-and-go snack between 2nd and 3rd periods during passing time between classes.
There are many ways to get information about the Harbor Learning Center. Check out our school website! It includes a school calendar that stays updated. We send electronic monthly newsletters. We use our auto dialer to remind families of changes to the schedule like for early release days. Students’ class progress be viewed on Skyward.
Our school services free breakfast, free morning snack, and free lunch to all of our Harbor Jr/Sr High students. Students attending our After School Program will also be getting a snack.
Safe and Supportive Campus Expectations
Our school is a choice school. Students and families CHOOSE to attend. We follow the same district policies and expectations as our other district schools. We continue to work with our students to follow these expectations which in turn supports a safe learning environment. One change students will notice this 2023-2024 school year is a SIGNIFICANT change in what students are allowed to do during lunch, in the parking lot, and in the areas surrounding our school. These changes will be reviewed at our August 30th Orientation. Not 18? You can NOT leave during lunch. 18 or over? You can sign yourself out for lunch but will lose that privilege if you return late to class. Students must follow our district and teacher cell phone guidelines and the NO tobacco/vaping guidelines.
Online Updating of Student Information
All families in the Aberdeen School District are expected to use Skyward before school starts to update their student’s information and fill out required back-to-school paperwork. Let us help you get it done! We will let you know when that process is “open” in Skyward to complete.
August 30th Orientation
The Harbor Learning Center starts on August 30 with Orientation from 8 AM to 1:30 PM. We encourage families to attend with their students. This orientation will take at least an hour. Orientation includes:
Take your school photo (all students are required to take a photo)
Check out a district Chromebook/laptop
Check your class schedule and make sure it is correct
Learn about school breakfast and lunch (All students receive free breakfast, free morning snack, and lunch!)
Review campus/school expectations
Meet your teachers and other staff members
Conference with your advisory teacher
Complete, if needed, the online Back to School Paperwork
Get any and all questions about the year answered!
Open Doors/GED Program
We are in year three of our Open Doors/GED program, and it is very successful! If your student is 16 years of age and behind in credits, they might be eligible to enroll in our GED program. We had over 30 students earn their GED in 2021-22 and over 50 students earn their GED in 2022-23.
Grays Harbor Academy, GHA
We host our district’s online school, GHA. We have over sixty K-12 students enrolled in this online option. It is important to talk to us before considering this online option. We contract with an online school, Edgenuity. This online option is very different from the distance learning offered in the 2020-2021 school year or during our temporary switch to distance learning in January 2022. It is a 100% ONLINE school with ONLINE teachers and the expectations are VERY HIGH! It works best for students who are self-motivated, self-starters, and love working on a computer for over 5 hours a day. Students who struggle online will be required to come to the HLC and receive support as part of an intervention. Students who do not make progress online will be returned to in-person school. We are still enrolling students in our online school. Let us know if you are interested. This year, Robert Sutlovich firstname.lastname@example.org is in charge of this program as Darby Carroll has transitioned to a new role as Hopkins Preschool Principal!
