8th Grade Prerecorded Moving Up Assembly
When is the Moving Up Assembly?
The 2019-2020 Moving Up Assembly videos will be posted at NOON on June 19th on the Miller Junior High Website. It will be posted under the Great Things @ Miller heading and it will be available for viewing anytime!
How can I watch the Moving Up Assembly?
At NOON on June 19th two new announcements will appear under the Great Things @ Miller section on the Miller Junior High Website. One will be 19-20 8th Grade Slideshow and it will contain the video slideshow right here on the Miller Website! The second will be 19-20 8th Grade Awards and will contain the video of a few select students being presented with awards by some of our staff. You can choose to watch one or both of these amazing virtual assemblies as many times as you want from anywhere you have internet access.
Where is the Assembly?
With the school buildings closed across the state of Washington, we are hosting a pre recorded "virtual" assembly that students/families/staff can view from anywhere! You will find the videos under the Great Things @ Miller headline at NOON on June 19th.
What happens during this assembly?
It is a long-standing tradition at Miller Junior High to end the last day of school with the Moving Up Assembly. This assembly honors and celebrates the entire departing 8th grade class. There is no individual recognition for our 8th-grade students like the senior's experience at high school graduation.
This year there will be two separate assembly videos, the first video (19-20 8th Grade Awards) consists of a few traditional awards presented to students by staff. The second video (19-20 8th Grade Slideshow) is a celebration slide show featuring side by side photos of our 8th-grade students with their Kindergarten photos.
How can we get the keepsake Moving Up Assembly Program?
We will mail 2 copies out to 8th graders with their end of the year progress reports. If a family needs more copies, we can make arrangements to have the family pick additional copies up at MJH.

Summer School Learning Opportunities
MJH wants to offer some of our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students the opportunity to keep learning over the summer by offering some online/distance learning classes.
We are going to be taking the names of interested students and then let you know if we have a class for you.
Below is some information and a link to a form to complete if you are interested.
Email lgriebel@asd5.org if you have questions!
2 Summer Learning opportunities will be available from June 22 - July 30, 2020.
The first course will target 8th grade students who will need some assistance with algebra readiness as they transition into 9th grade next school year.
The second course is for 6th, 7th and 8th graders and will address general math and reading strategies to support student learning.
Seats are limited.
Please visit the link below and fill in the contact information so we may contact you with more information and official registration once Summer Learning plans have been finalized.

Yearbook Delays
On top of this, due to the rioting, they had to shut down their night shifts to ensure the safety of their employees.
They are doing everything they can, including hiring contractors to help get books out to thousands of schools across the US and Canada, including here in Aberdeen.
Last Chance to Buy a 2019-20 MJH Yearbook!
We have ordered a limited number of extra yearbooks so that those who were not able to order online may still have the opportunity to purchase a yearbook. This year we have ordered a few extra yearbooks. They will be available on a “first to pay, first to reserve a yearbook” basis. Each yearbook will cost $25.
If you want to buy a yearbook, fill out this form:
https://forms.gle/9pTEUK5tEVFohT6F8
When you have filled out your form, we will add the charge to your Skyward account. This charge could take up to 24 hours to appear in your account. We are sorry that due to COVID-19 closing our school buildings, we cannot take in-person payment. You will receive information about when you can pick up your yearbook, whether you ordered it online or through this offer, once the details have been finalized.
If you need their Skyward Family Access log-in and password information, please email Mrs. McNeal at jmcneal@asd5.org.
Miller Awards Assembly
At the end of each traditional school year, Miller hosts for students only an awards assembly.
These awards are given by departments- like English, History, Science, Social Studies, PE, Music, and Electives.
Due to distance learning, this assembly has been altered. It is now a pre recorded assembly that will be available to view on the website at noon on Thursday June 18th.
Our PE department elected to have their own awards event.
Some grade level teams are also having their own awards events.
Miller Office Hours
There are limited staff currently working in the Miller Office. We are still closed to the public, however. If you need something or have questions please call 360 538 2100. You can leave a message and someone will return your call.
Music Blazer Information:
7th and 8th Grade Band Students: There is a $10 fee to have your band blazer cleaned at the end of the year. Within the next couple of days, this fee will appear on your Skyward list of fees and fines and can be paid through Skyward with a card.
Message about end of the Year Progress Reports
As this interesting year draws to a close, we want to provide some information about our MJH end of the year report cards.
Our school year ends on June 19, and report cards will be mailed to families as usual.
The report cards will have the first trimester letter grades, the second trimester letter grades, and some information from the third trimester.
Our state provided guidance and expectations about grading for all students during the pandemic and state-wide distance learning. According to our state, "Students in grades K –8 will be challenged to demonstrate effort and success in learning standards established by their teachers. Students will move on to the next grade, unless by mutual agreement between parents/guardians and teachers they agree to repeat a grade or a portion of the learning missed."
At our middle school, only the students taking Algebra receive letter grades which align with Aberdeen High School third trimester grading practices. All other students, in all other classes, will not receive letter grades. Instead, teachers tracked student engagement, family contact and returned assignments. Returned assignments were either complete or not complete. On the end of the year report cards, third trimester classes will therefore show "P" or "NE" depending on whether the student completed assignments during distance learning.
A "P" means the student was participating in distance learning. An "NE" means that there was no evidence of participation in Miller Junior High provided distance learning.
As previously stated, all students will move on to the next grade level regardless of the "P" or the "NE".
We know that distance learning is not how we expected to end our school year. We miss our students and families. We remain hopeful that we can return to school in the fall. If we are in a version of distance learning in the fall, we anticipate grading and reporting to be more rigorous.
